The music portion of SXSW officially begins tomorrow! Cue the shrieks… of both excitement and panic because you still haven’t figured out what artists you should be checking out. No sweat – we’ve got you covered! We created a daily breakdown of our favourite showcasing bands, and here are our best bets for Tuesday, March 17, 2015:
Sh*t, it’s as if a better ending could not have been written for my last day in Austin. With 6th street transformed into Ghost Town, we ventured to South Congress to do some vintage shopping..and apparently, so did everyone else left in Austin.
We bumped into Adrien Grenier aka Vinnie Chase from Entourage in what just so happend to be the coolest cowboy boot town in all of America. And then he must have heard our Gueros buzzer because he totally followed us there. Or something. Also in the mood for some delicious Mexican grub? Val Kilmer plus the Darlings of Chelsea
And just when we thought our night would consist of hiding from the hobos who now occupied 6th street on the OMNI’s rooftop in freezing temperatures, we got invited to a house party just outside of downtown Austin that will now go down in history;
Now I don’t want to reveal too much and be THAT person, but the-adorable-and-awesome-and-if-I-were-ever-musically- inclined-I’d-want-to-be-in-their-band. The Like performed and brought along their roadie, BILL MOTHER-EFFING MURRAY.
Hosted by the most awesome people of Austin and LA, the party was everything you’d ever think a southern hospitality party with Bill Murray would be… and so much more!
Thanks for the memories Austin/LA boys, The Like, Bill Murray and Friends. See you in 2011!
Oh wow, so day three FriDAY(please note: DAY) just kept on giving! Austin had already killed it with amazing-ness and FridDAY was no exception. I picked up my Spin Magazine Party passes and headed to the day party at my newly favourite outdoor venue, Stubbs.
First, let me praise Spin for the AMAZING organization. The line up into the party went quickly and smoothly, the staff were peachy sweet and Spin made sure to spoil its guest not only with boozey-lisciousness but free swag, and most importantly an AMAZING line-up. I got there just in time for Fucked UP and holy sh*t, did they deliver!
Fucked up’s frontman Damian Abraham blew my mind with hardcore punk rock screams and the most amazing hi-jinks including empyting water bottles into a the dirt ground and creating his own mudbath. But even with the rolling around in the mud and grabbing fans and throwing them upside down, something I would normally run away screaming from, i couldnt help but be charmed the pants off (well, not literally but you know) and love every.minute! Thanks for making my day, Fucked Up/Spin!
After the Fucked Up performance, I walked back to the main area of 6th street to check out the Darlings of Chelsea. The boys were backed up a bit, so I went back to Stubbs just in time to see the last few songs of the soulfoul and absolutely lovely Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Right after her set, the party got even busier as everyone patiently awaited the return of …dum…dum..dum…HOLE – as in their first show in over ten years!!! And boy, was it pretty awesome.
First off, let me have my girl moment and say Courtney Love looked pretty effing awesome for someone who I always remembered as just a big ole mess. It’s like she took off that decade JUST to recuparate. She started the Stubbs show by introducing her new band who she said was going to stay that way ‘for a long time’. Hole is back people. woots!Starting the show off with the Rolling Stones cover “Sympathy for the Devil”, Ms. Love ripped through her set playing both old favourites and new tunes from the forthcoming album out in April. She was entertaining as heck, playful with the crowd and I’m quite convinced won just about everybody over!
After the performance was over, I went over to say hello to a new friend I had made – my Spin party bestie Ezra aka Damian from Californication – who was there supporting his girlfriend, the gorgeous Zoe Kravitz – walked back to my hotel and promptly passed out from heat stroke at around 6:30pm.
Thanks Spin, for the awesomeness!
After my three hour and then some nap, I walked around like a Zombie catching a few bands including Jason Collette with Zeus, Broken Social Scene and Shout Out Out Out and breaking all the NO TORONTO BANDS rules a certain someone who shall remain nameless imposed on me.
Day four coming right up!
So after an 18 hour journey which included two plane rides, three buses, one cab ride, an overnight stay inside the airport and getting hit on for three hours by a 37-year old man named DeValle who looked 18, had six children, two of whom were the same age and pretty sure NOT twins…your SundayBrunch SXSW 2010 representative is FINALLY here! slghfskghdfkghdfkghdkgh!!!!!!!!!!
After settling into my very awesome hotel (thanks Hilton! you may be my new fave), I went across the street to pick up my pass and let the games begin! This place is, like, THE.COOLEST. You cant help but smile/giggle/look a lil’ crazy to yourself when walking around throngs of people who are all here just being awesome and happy and loving every minute. Side note: this place is also totally a babe convention!
Moving on; after getting my pass I rushed back to the hotel and quickly changed to enjoy some good grub and free beer at Collective Concerts’ annual BBQ at a cool Austin joint called the Green Mesquite… YUM! Shortly after, it was off to see the first of many (so much!) SXSW bands! After watching Seattle’s The Pharmacy (who I gave thumbs up to, while my amazing show partners who liked enough, but ‘nothing to write home about’-ed them) and Denmark’s Astroids Galaxy Tour – (who soundchecked for what seemed like an eternity, which was a bit too much and annoying given my exhaustion and do other bands even do this at SouthBy?) and even though I REALLY wanted to see the Middle East – I called it a night and turned my usual night-owlness in at eleven pm aka the time I’m usually rearin’ to go out.
It’s been an experience to say the least so far and Im up and ready to do it all x 1million hardcore tonight!
SXSW, I’m IN LOVE with you and can’t wait for more.
But really, who can concentrate on Canadian Music Week this year when there's SXSW to get ready for?!
I wish I could be more excited for CMW as I have been for so many years, however the older I get and the more I don't get the fuss or excitment of seeing your friend's band or the local darlings play for the millionth time at a showcase that should be reserved for new, exciting and buzzworthy bands, the less into CMW I am.
If I see anything of excitement this year, I'll be sure to keep you posted, in the meantime, I suggest you check out the Horseshoe Tavern and Lee's Palace for CMW bands and showcases worth seeing (starting with today's incredible Ian Blurton & Huron plus Yukon Blonde pre-CMW shocase at the Horseshoe Tavern).
Moving on, from this point forward, I'll try to regularly update the blog of bands I am OMFG SOOOOOO STOKED ALREADY BOUGHT TRANQUALIZER TO CALM ME to see at SXSW.
From Roky Erickson WITH Okkervil River to The Growlers to ok…even Hole, holy eff, SXSW, can't wait to meet you!!!
Here it is, kittens.
I have included below the first couple hundred bands in all their glory, bolded some more the Canadian bands, and italicized some random comments.
With band names like Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO, how can you NOT want to check out that madness that I’m sure will be?! US TBS gals are now collecting donations and/or houses and planes if anyone’s up there willing to be our sugar erm…friends.
